The first part is a closed-book written examination with multiple choice questions pertaining to the safe operation of high pressure steam boilers and steam-driven equipment.
Except for foreign language translation dictionaries, no books or reference materials of any kind are permitted to be used during the examination. The Examiners are not obligated to review test results with an unsuccessful applicant.
Applicants who attain at least 35 correct answers from 50 questions in the written Steam Engineer exam or 18 correct answers from 25 questions in either the Boiler Operator or Turbine Endorsement written exam will be eligible for the oral interview. Both the written and oral exams must be passed in order to get a boiler operator or steam engineer license or the turbine endorsement. Cheating during the written exams will result in automatic failure of the applicant and may affect the acceptability of the applicant to take other City examinations.
If unable to take the examination, the applicant will automatically be rescheduled. If examinations are not taken within that time, a new application must be filed and new fees paid.
The previous fees shall not be refundable. Grade 4 license Possess at least ONE of the following qualifications: Six months as an active MD Grade 5, or Three credit hours or CEUs in boiler operations or safety Grade 3 license Possess at least ONE of the following qualifications: Two years' experience as active MD Grade 4 or 5; One year experience as active MD Grade 4 or 5, and six credit hours or CEUs in boiler operations or safety, Valid marine engineer's certificate or chief petty officer's certificate from the United States Navy, or Equivalent experience to 1, 2, or 3 above may be submitted to the Board for consideration and approval.
Grade 2 license Possess at least ONE of the following qualifications: Thirty-six months of documented experience as an active MD Grade 3 engineer under the direction and control of a licensed MD Grade 2 or MD Grade 1 One year of credit for six credit hours or CEUs in boiler safety or operations; AND One year of credit for holding a current active license as a: Master plumber Master heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration contractor Master restricted heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contractor Four-year mechanical engineering degree from an accredited university or college Licensure as a professional engineer and six months of documented experience as a MD Grade 3, MD Grade 4 or MD Grade 5 stationary engineer, or A valid marine engineer's certificate or chief petty officer's certificate from the United States Navy.
Equivalent experience to 1, 2, 3 or 4 above may be submitted to the Board for consideration and approval. One year of credit for six credit hours or CEUs in boiler safety or operations; AND One year of credit for holding a current active license as a: Master plumber Master heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration contractor Master restricted heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contractor Four-year mechanical engineering degree from an accredited university or college Licensure as a professional engineer, including: One year of documented experience as a professional engineer; AND One year of documented experience as a MD Grade 2 under the direction and control of a MD Grade 1.
Please note that the Contractor License office can only give application status to the actual applicant. If your online or mail-in application is approved, you will have 90 days to procure your certificate by paying the appropriate fee amount. Supervisor certificates must be renewed every three years. In the event that your application is not approved, you will have the opportunity to apply a second time.
Additional documentation is required. If the application is not approved the second time, there is a six-month waiting period before applicants can re-apply for the same certificate type. Minimum experience and testing requirements Boilermaker Journeyman Scope of Work Allows for the installation and erection of steam and hot water boilers, pressure vessels, precipitators, incinerators, breeching, chimneys, plate and casings.
Minimum Experience Required to Apply Four 4 years boilermaker field installation experience in an apprenticeship or on-the-job training program completing a minimum of 7, hours. Experience as a journeyman, supervisor, or contractor under a recognized licensing authority may be accepted on a year-for-year basis.
List exact scope of work, duties, projects performed, and equipment operated by the individual applying for the certificate. List exact start and end dates month and year of construction work only for each project.
Projects should have been completed within the last ten 10 years. List the address for each project mentioned. List as many projects needed in order to cover the required amount of experience. Boiler Operator Class A Scope of Work Allows the holder to take charge of and operate all steam boilers and appurtenances, steam pumps, steam turbines and steam engines.
Minimum Experience Required to Apply Three 3 years in boiler operating work as a trainee or apprentice on equipment producing over hp and steam pressure over p. Boiler Operator Class B Scope of Work Allows the holder to take charge of and operate all steam boilers and appurtenances, steam pumps, steam turbines and steam engines containing a steam pressure between 15 and psi and where the equipment produces a total of between 10 and horsepower at Denver altitude.

Boilermaker Supervisor Certificate Scope of Work To install, assemble or repair steam and hot water boilers, all pressure and non-pressure vessels, precipitators, breeching, metal stacks, plates and casings. Minimum Experience Required to Apply Eight 8 years in boilermaker work consisting of the following: Four 4 years field installation experience in a journeyman or on-the-job training program.
Four 4 years experience as a designer or supervisor. Gas Service Journeyman Scope of Work Allows for the installation of the following equipment utilizing gas or liquid fuel: Gas and liquid fuel piping.
The low-voltage wiring permitted by this Certificate shall apply to gas or liquid fuel-fired appliances only. Two 2 years field installation experience as a designer or supervisor. Heating and Ventilating Journeyman Scope of Work Allows for the installation of: Heating and Ventilating — warm air heating, ductwork, ventilation and evaporative cooling, exterior sheet metal, water heaters not exceeding Mbtu input, gas piping, burners, venting and controls, exhaust systems and appurtenances thereof, and low-voltage wiring that does not exceed 48 volts and is not enclosed in a conduit or raceway.
Air Conditioning — refrigeration systems and appurtenant cooling towers, pipe insulation and low voltage wiring which does not exceed 48 volts and is not enclosed in a conduit or raceway.
Heating and Ventilating Class A Supervisor Scope of Work To install, add to, alter or repair warm air heating, venting, ventilation, evaporative cooling, exhaust systems and their appurtenances, ductwork, dust collection systems, domestic and commercial range hoods, water heaters not exceeding Mbtu input, gas piping; burners, controls and venting, trash and laundry chutes; exterior sheet metal, duct insulation, low voltage wiring that does not exceed 48 volts and is not enclosed in a conduit or raceway and maximum of 50 tons of refrigeration when it is utilized for comfort cooling and the refrigerating system is self-contained.
Four 4 years in one or more of these positions: Designer, Draftsman or Supervisor. Heating and Ventilating Class B Supervisor — Residential Only Scope of Work To install, add to, alter or repair, in one- or two-family dwellings, IRC townhomes or U Occupancies only: Heating and Ventilating — warm air heating systems and their appurtenances, ductwork, ventilation, evaporative cooling, duct insulation, exterior sheet metal, gas piping; burners, venting and controls, water heaters not exceeding Mbtu input and low voltage wiring that does not exceed 48 volts and is not enclosed in a conduit or raceway.
Air Conditioning — refrigeration systems of 5 tons or less. Minimum Experience Required to Apply Covers residential only Six 6 years in residential heating and ventilating work consisting of the following: Four 4 years as a heating and ventilating journeyman mechanic.
