The journey of becoming a licensed cosmetologist in Texas starts with attending and completing an appropriate cosmetology education and training program. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation is responsible for license issuance.
It requires completing hours of a professional cosmetology school program. The above-mentioned programs will furnish you with the appropriate and necessary skills that you will need to obtain a cosmetology license and practice as a cosmetologist in Texas. No matter which educational program you choose, they will all concentrate on the following material:.
When you apply to take the necessary examinations, the application is also considered to be the main application for your cosmetology license. You can apply here. Make sure you present all the required documents for the license. Do not forget to present a proof that you are 17 years old or older. In addition to it, also present your high school diploma. In the first place, you should take the written exam. It is a computer-based exam, which contains multiple-choice questions.
The questions cover disinfection, sanitation, safety, shampooing and conditioning, braid extensions, hair coloring. They also include chemical texture services, licensing and regulations, skin and nail care. The practical exam is to test your practical skills. Use this form to request that your license be moved to either inactive status, or back to active status.
Use this form when you need to update your license with changes to your information, or to request a duplicate license be mailed to you.
You may also order a duplicate license online. Use these forms to request renewal of a license that has been expired for less than three years. If you prefer to renew by mail, please contact us to request a renewal form by mail. Once you pay the renewal fees, you will have one year to complete your renewal, including meeting all continuing education requirements.
Fees are not refundable or transferrable. Continuing education providers have seven days to report completed hours to TDLR. If you do not see your continuing education credit listed seven days after you have completed the course, please contact the course provider. If you have not received your license within 14 days, and you have verified your renewal on our website, please contact us by email.
If you have ever been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor other than a minor traffic violation or pleaded guilty or no contest resulting in a deferred adjudication to any in-state, out-of-state or federal criminal offense, you must provide a completed Criminal History Questionnaire PDF along with your application materials.
The department will conduct a criminal history background check on all persons who apply for a license. Criminal convictions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Licenses may be denied based on the nature of the conviction and how long prior to the application the conviction occurred. Depending on your criminal history, a review can take from one to six weeks to complete. Individuals may request TDLR review their criminal background before actually applying for a license. TDLR uses the same process for this pre-application evaluation as the process described below.
See the Criminal History Evaluation Letter page for more information.
